Six miles of the Trans Pennine Trail from Wortley south through Wharncliffe Woods to Grenoside, on forest tracks rather than old railway. It leaves the car park behind the equestrian centre at Cote Green, crosses the Don valley and climbs into the plantations above Wharncliffe Crags, with long views west over Stocksbridge and Deepcar from the edge. The Forestry England tracks through Wharncliffe are wide, stony and used by mountain bikers at speed. It finishes at the Woodhead Road car park above Grenoside, where the shops in the village are a few minutes further on.

THE SMALL PRINTTrans Pennine Trail walker user code: "Please keep dogs under close control and in sight. It is better to use a short lead, especially on highly populated sections and near farm animals and horses", and "Please pick up after your dog and put it in a bin. If no bins are available, take your dog waste home." The Wortley end runs past a working livery, and mountain bikers come down the Wharncliffe tracks fast, which are the two reasons to have a lead in hand. The northern half is in Barnsley, where the borough-wide dog control PSPO of 1 April 2025 requires clearing up, carrying the means, and leading the dog on an authorised officer's direction, fixed penalty £100. The southern half is in Sheffield, which has no dog PSPO but asks you to follow its Responsible Dog Walking Code of Conduct and fines £50 for fouling.
