An undulating 1.3 miles beside the River Taw below the northern tors, three quarters of an hour with 70 metres of climbing on riverside path, one short lane and a couple of gates. Start at the small National Trust car park at Finch Foundry in Sticklepath, free to members and only twenty or so spaces, with the village and the Devonshire Inn a minute away and the A30 close enough for an easy detour off it. It is a first-rate short leg-stretch for a dog with clean shallow water to drink and paddle in the whole way, shade in the oak scrub and no stiles, though the field sections are grazed and the moorland gate at the top end opens straight onto open access land where lead rules apply from March to July.

THE SMALL PRINTGrazing in the riverside fields means leads through them; beyond the moor gate this is Dartmoor access land, where dogs must be on a lead between 1 March and 31 July for ground-nesting birds and lambing.
