Four miles of genuinely flat field walking west of the town returning through Sowerby, an hour and three quarters, on the town's own waymarked route with a few kissing gates and one short lane. Start from the Market Place in Thirsk, where the main car park is free for three hours, and Thirsk station is a mile and a half west on the East Coast line with a bus link into town. This is arable and pasture country so sheep are about and leads go on across the grazed fields, and there is no natural water until you reach the Cod Beck at the Sowerby end; the plough headlands are heavy going after Christmas, but the Sowerby half is on lane and tree-lined green and stays perfectly walkable in winter.
