Kilburn White Horse and the Gliding Club

A 3.8-mile escarpment loop with 120 metres of ascent and about an hour and three quarters, running north along the cliff top past the Yorkshire Gliding Club before dropping back below the White Horse itself; the top path is level and firm, the return through the beech hangar is steep, rooty and slippery after rain. It starts at the White Horse car park on the Kilburn road below Sutton Bank, which is pay-and-display and has an ice cream van most summer afternoons but no other facilities. There is no water anywhere on the route so carry it, the woodland below the escarpment is fine for a dog off the lead, but the cliff edge is entirely unfenced with a hundred-metre drop, gliders are winch-launched close to the path, and the turf figure itself is fenced off to protect it.
