Directions to the start →

The best-known walk on the north-east edge of Dartmoor: 4.1 miles and two and a half hours along the Hunters Path high above the Teign, down to the packhorse bridge at Fingle and back through the gorge on the Fishermans Path, with 240 metres of climbing, two flights of steps and mixed rocky and root-bound going. Start at the main National Trust car park at Castle Drogo, free to members and charged otherwise, with an overflow field in high season and a bus link that is thin enough to be worth checking. Dogs are welcome on leads throughout the estate countryside, the river gives them clean deep pools to swim in the whole way back, and the Fingle Bridge Inn at the halfway point takes them; the Fishermans Path involves a scramble round the base of Sharp Tor that a nervous dog will not enjoy.

THE SMALL PRINTThe National Trust asks for dogs on leads throughout the countryside and informal garden areas at Castle Drogo; the deer park wall section crosses grazed land and the formal garden and house are not open to dogs.
