Five miles and about two hours on field paths, woodland and farm tracks between the two villages, with 70 metres of climbing, several ponds along the way and heavy clay going after rain. Start at the Shoulder of Mutton in Kirkby Overblow, where there is roadside parking on the village street and long views south over Wharfedale; Spofforth at the far end has the Castle Inn and the ruined castle grounds. Almost all of it crosses working farmland with sheep and arable, so dogs stay on the lead between gates, and there are a few stiles that a heavy dog will need helping over.

THE SMALL PRINTDogs on leads across the working farmland and past the ponds; several stiles need a lift for a large dog.
