Open medieval common land beside Cod Beck, reached from Sowerby's elegant tree-lined Front Street, and the default daily dog walk for Thirsk and Sowerby. Riverside grass paths link into a roughly three-mile circular between the two settlements. The Flatts are still working pasture where cattle and sheep graze, so keep dogs on leads around stock.

A back-lane fish and chip shop in Sowerby, a village that has effectively become Thirsk's southern suburb but keeps its own character. Thirsk Tourist Information notes the house rule that dogs always get a free sausage, which tells you everything about the welcome. Eat them on the green or take them down to Sowerby Flatts.
