Six miles round the two villages that bracket Thirsk, about two and a half hours, with barely thirty metres of ascent in the whole circuit and field paths, beck-side tracks and a short town section to link them. Start in Thirsk Market Place with three hours of free parking, or step off the train at Thirsk station and pick the route up on the western arc; there are pubs at both ends and a tea room in Sowerby. Sheep graze the pasture on the South Kilvington side so leads on there, the Cod Beck runs beside a good third of the walk with easy shallow entries for a drink or a paddle, and because the beck-side paths are made up this stays one of the more reliable January walks in the Vale of Mowbray even when the plough land is unwalkable.
