A 3.6-mile circular of about an hour and three quarters on made paths and zigzag steps through the restored South Cliff Gardens, out to the wilder scrub above Wheatcroft and back along the Esplanade, with 130 metres of climbing taken in short flights. Start at the Spa, where there is a large pay-and-display car park and the Central Tramway lifts you back up to the town if you have had enough. Dogs are welcome throughout the gardens on the lead, there are drinking taps by the Italian Gardens shelters, and the cliff path beyond Holbeck runs along the top of an old landslip where the ground is soft and the edge is not fenced.

THE SMALL PRINTThe signed central stretch of Scarborough South Bay beach is closed to dogs from 1 May to 30 September under North Yorkshire Council's dog control public spaces protection order, with a £100 fixed penalty. Between those dates walk the sands south of the Spa footbridge towards Wheatcroft, which stay open to dogs all year. Dogs must be on the lead throughout South Cliff Gardens and Holbeck Gardens, and the clifftop path south of Holbeck runs along an unfenced landslip edge.
