One of the last lowland heaths in northern England, criss-crossed by three waymarked trails over old bomber-airfield hardstandings, heather and ponds — the red Bombs and Lizards route is the classic. Dogs must be kept on short leads at all times: Longhorn cattle, Hebridean sheep and Exmoor ponies graze the common and nightjars nest on the ground in summer. Car parks at King Rudding Lane near Riccall, Sandy Lane and Common Road in Skipwith village; parts follow firm wartime tracks.

A smart country pub in tiny Skipwith, ten miles south of York and a few minutes from Skipwith Common. Dogs are welcome in the bar area and the outdoor spaces after a walk, with water bowls and treats always on hand. The restaurant is the one part of the building they cannot join you in.
