Skelton Tower and Newtondale from Levisham

Eight miles with 240 metres of ascent and about three and a half hours, dropping to Levisham Beck before climbing onto Levisham Moor for the ruined shooting box at Skelton Tower above Newtondale and returning along the moor edge; the moor is heather and peat and wet underfoot, and the descent to the beck is steep and stepped. It starts at the top of Levisham village by the Horseshoe Inn, where the wide grass verge is the parking, and Levisham station on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway is a mile and a half down the hill for a car-free approach. Levisham Beck gives good deep water at the start and finish, the moor is broad open running country, but there is an unfenced drop of some fifty feet at Skelton Tower straight into Newtondale, and leads are required on the moor from 1 March to 31 July.
