Shaw Wood

Twenty-eight hectares of broadleaf woodland north-west of Armthorpe, known locally as Bluebell Wood or Basil Wood, bought by the council in 1985 to secure its future. The oldest part, Armthorpe Shaw, was recorded as woodland more than seven centuries ago, and the whole site is an SSSI on Natural England's register of semi-natural ancient woodland and its invertebrate register. It is a compact wood on flat ground with entrances off Basil Avenue, Mansfield Crescent and Mere Lane, so it works as a half-hour circuit from the houses rather than a day out. There is no water and no livestock in it, so under the Doncaster PSPO there is no standing lead requirement, and there is no car park, no toilets and nothing to buy anywhere on the site.
