Five miles and about two and three quarter hours, climbing steadily out of town on Mitchell Lane and High Hill Lane to a forty-foot waterfall hidden in a limestone gorge, then coming back on the stony Settle Loop track with Ingleborough filling the view. It starts in Settle market place, and Settle railway station on the Settle to Carlisle line is a four-minute walk away, so the whole thing is doable by train from Leeds. The walled lanes and the Loop are gated rather than stiled, which is a rare mercy for a big dog in this corner of the Dales, and Stockdale Beck gives a good drink; sheep graze every field on the route so the lead stays on, and the last few yards down into Scaleber Wood are a slippery scramble on wet limestone above a deep pool, best done without a dog attached to your wrist.

THE SMALL PRINTLeads throughout - the walled lanes are grazed on both sides and the Settle Loop crosses open sheep pasture. The scramble down to the fall itself is steep, wet rock above a deep plunge pool.
