A hard 10.5-mile town-and-country round of five hours or so, taking in all three of Scarborough's high points for 400 metres of climbing, half of it on pavement and estate road and half on woodland and clifftop path. It starts at the railway station, which is the sensible way to arrive, and the loop can be cut short at the Spa if legs give out. There is good off-lead ground in the Mere woods and on the castle headland grass, but this is a lead walk for long stretches through streets, the castle cliff edge is unfenced and steep, and the beaches below carry a summer dog ban.

THE SMALL PRINTThe signed central stretch of Scarborough South Bay and North Bay beaches is closed to dogs from 1 May to 30 September under North Yorkshire Council's dog control public spaces protection order, with a £100 fixed penalty. Between those dates use the sands south of the Spa or the northern end towards Scalby Mills, both open to dogs all year. About four miles of this route is on pavement or estate road where dogs must be on the lead, and the grass above the castle cliff ends in an unfenced 60-metre drop.
