An easy 4.3-mile circular of two hours with 140 metres of climbing, from the Spa along the South Bay sands to the harbour and lighthouse, up onto the castle headland and back down through St Nicholas Gardens past the Central Tramway. Start at the Spa, where there is pay-and-display parking on Foreshore Road, or walk down from Scarborough station in about fifteen minutes. Hard surfaces and steps rather than mud, so kind on old paws, but the South Bay beach is closed to dogs in summer and the harbourside is busy with traffic, fish waste and bold gulls.

THE SMALL PRINTScarborough South Bay beach is closed to dogs from the West Pier to the southernmost flight of steps by the underground car park roundabout between 1 May and 30 September under North Yorkshire Council's dog control order. Outside those months the sands are open; in summer walk the beach south of the Spa towards Holbeck, or take the castle headland and Marine Drive, which allow dogs all year.
