The RSPB's flagship Dearne Valley reserve at Broomhill, with hides, a visitor centre, a shop and a cafe on former colliery washland between Wombwell and Wath. It is listed here for one reason: the line the RSPB draws is precise and easy to get wrong. Dogs are welcome in the courtyard, where the cafe and toilets are, and nowhere else on the site. If you have driven here to walk a dog, the RSPB itself points you at the Trans Pennine Trail, which runs past the entrance, or at its Gypsy Marsh satellite site.

THE SMALL PRINTThe RSPB's own words: "Dogs are welcome in the courtyard at Old Moor, but no dogs, except assistance dogs, are permitted on the reserve, or in the Visitor Centre due to the sensitive wildlife and habitats here." Assistance dogs are welcome throughout. The RSPB's stated reason is disturbance: "Even if dogs are very well behaved, wildlife can easily become startled by a dog they perceive as a predator." It names the alternatives itself: the satellite sites at Adwick Washlands, Gypsy Marsh and Edderthorpe, where dogs are welcome on a lead or under close control, and the Trans Pennine Trail. Barbecues are not permitted on the reserve at any time.
