A short, steep 4.3-mile round with 200 metres of ascent packed into the first half, roughly two hours, climbing the dale side to the calcining kilns of the East Mines and returning on the old railway formation; the pull out of the village is unrelenting and the kiln area is loose shale underfoot. It starts in Rosedale Abbey village centre by the Milburn Arms, where the National Park car park behind the green is the only sensible parking and fills fast in daffodil season and in August. The becks crossed on the way up give a drink, the railway formation is broad, firm and easy for a dog to trot along, but the kiln ruins have unfenced drops and open shafts, and sheep graze the intake fields all the way up.
A tea garden on a working hill farm at the very head of Rosedale, reached up the dale road from Rosedale Abbey, with homemade cakes, loose-leaf teas and sausage rolls served against a sweeping valley panorama. Well-behaved dogs are more than welcome in the garden. Arguably the most peaceful cuppa in the National Park, and handy for the ironstone railway trackbed above.
A big 12.3-mile day with 490 metres of ascent and close to six hours, climbing out of the dale to the lonely moor road at Hamer before dropping into the forest tracks of Cropton and working back along the dale bottom; the moor crossing is genuinely boggy and there is no shelter of any kind on the tops. It starts at the National Park car park in Rosedale Abbey, and it is worth knowing there is no shop or refill point between the village and the return, so carry everything for both of you. The forest tracks are ideal for a dog to run and the River Seven gives a swim at the end, but the moor is grouse ground with ground-nesting birds and free-ranging sheep, so leads go on for the open sections from 1 March to 31 July.
A Flower of May countryside park in the middle of Rosedale Abbey village, ringed by moorland, taking tourers, motorhomes, tents, glamping pods and cottages. Up to two dogs per pitch are welcome by prior agreement, kept on short leads around the park, though they cannot enter the reception, shop or facilities blocks. Chimney Bank and the ironstone railway walks start from the village.
