A half-mile curve of grass terrace laid out in the eighteenth century to frame the abbey ruins below, with a temple at each end. The National Trust says dogs are very welcome here, and there are few better places for a slow walk with acres of open lawn.

Rievaulx Abbey

The soaring 12th-century Cistercian ruin in the wooded valley of the Rye, among the most complete and most atmospheric abbey remains in England. English Heritage welcomes dogs on leads in the ruins and even in the tearoom (just not at the counter), so there is no need to leave anyone tied up outside. Open daily 10am to 5pm; pairs perfectly with the Cleveland Way walk in from Helmsley.
