A 4.1-mile woodland circular of about two hours that follows the green Wallis trail up a steep, root-laced pull to the top of the woods before contouring back above Forge Valley, with 175 metres of climbing and paths that stay greasy well into spring. Start at the free Throxenby Mere car park on the Scarborough to Ayton road, where the number 128 bus stops, and note the trail crosses itself in a figure of eight so the waymark colour matters more than instinct. The mere is a proper drinking and swimming stop, the woods are quiet enough for a long off-lead run once you are off the road, and there is no livestock, though the ground drops away sharply on the Forge Valley side.
A hotel built around muddy boots and sandy paws, where dogs are welcome throughout — including the Bareca bar-restaurant and even the Film Club cinema. Every dog gets a laundered vet bed and a toy to take home, plus free use of the self-service grooming room, for £15 per dog per night (maximum two per room).
The Victorian funicular that has linked Scarborough's town centre to the South Bay beach since 1881 — and saves tired legs (and paws) the climb. All dogs are carried free of charge provided they're kept under control and on a lead; the operator reserves the right to refuse a dog behaving badly towards others.
Five and a half linear miles of about three hours along the softest cliffs on the North Yorkshire coast, with 200 metres of up and down, a couple of long flights of steps and a stretch of tarmac where the trail has been diverted inland by landslip at Osgodby. Start at the Spa and catch the number 12 or 13 bus back from the A165 at Cayton Bay, which runs every half hour. Cornelian Bay and Cayton Bay are both dog friendly all year and reachable down steep wooded steps, but this cliff is actively slipping, the edge is unfenced for most of the way, and the diversion follows the verge of a fast main road.
