Danby Park and Commondale Moor

Eight and three quarter miles with 270 metres of ascent and about four hours, crossing Commondale Moor to the oak woods of Danby Park and returning by the Esk and the moor track above the village; the moor crossing is peat and rush and holds water well into June, while the woodland paths are firm. It starts by the Cleveland Inn at Commondale, where roadside parking is limited to a few spaces but Commondale station on the Esk Valley line is a request stop right in the village. Commondale Beck and the Esk both give good water and the moor is wide open ground for a strong dog, but sheep range loose across the whole moor and the beck-side fields, and this is important nesting habitat, so leads on the open moor from 1 March to 31 July.
