Pudding Pie Hill and Sowerby village

Three flat miles round the village and out to the Anglo-Saxon burial mound known as Pudding Pie Hill, an hour and a quarter, on lane, green and field path with a couple of kissing gates and one field that stays soft all winter. Start on Front Street in Sowerby under the lime avenue, where there is free roadside parking, and the Thirsk town bus runs to the village; the mound itself is on private land but the footpath passes close beneath it. Sheep graze the fields south of the village so leads go on there, the Cod Beck runs alongside the Flatts with shallow gravel entries a dog can get in and out of easily, and the lane and green sections keep this walkable through the wettest months when the field paths are not.
