Six and a half miles and a little over three hours, climbing 230 metres in two goes, the second of them a stiff haul up the wooded flank of Oliver's Mount to the war memorial and one of the best views on the coast. Start at the Mere on Queen Margaret's Road, where parking is free and the number 12 bus passes on Seamer Road a few minutes away. There are long stretches of woodland and lakeside where a steady dog can be off the lead, water at both ends, and cattle in the fields above the railway, but the summit road is open to traffic and is a favourite with motorcyclists, so leads go on before you reach the memorial.

THE SMALL PRINTThe lane over the summit of Oliver's Mount is a public road, popular with motorcyclists and used for racing on event weekends, so dogs need to be on the lead for roughly a mile from the memorial down to Weaponness. Cattle graze the fields between the railway and Deepdale from spring to autumn.
