Six and a half miles west across the flat Wiske country to the hamlet of Yafforth and back, three hours, on field paths and quiet lanes with a couple of plank bridges over drains and one stile. Start from the town centre near the parish church and head out through Romanby; Northallerton station is fifteen minutes from the start and the 73 bus runs to the villages on this side of town. Cattle and sheep are on the riverside pastures for most of the year and calves make a herd genuinely dangerous, so this is a lead-on walk across the grazed ground; the Wiske is a slow muddy river, fine for a drink but with steep clay banks a small dog will struggle to climb out of, and the low ground here holds water badly and is best left alone from December to February.
