Four and a half miles north to the linen-weaving village of Brompton along the Cod Beck and back by field paths, two hours, flat all the way with kissing gates rather than stiles and one stretch of made-up track. Start at the Applegarth car park behind the High Street, which is pay and display but cheap, and Brompton has a good village pub and a bus back into town if the legs have had enough. The beck-side stretch is enclosed and safe for a dog off lead, but the return fields carry sheep and cattle so leads go on there and calves in spring deserve real caution; the Cod Beck is shallow, gravel-bottomed and easy for a dog to get in and out of, and the beck path drains well enough to stay walkable through most of the winter.
