Just under three level miles from Naburn village down to the lock at the tidal limit of the Ouse, up the bank to the old railway swing bridge with its Fisher of Dreams sculpture, and back on the trackbed and lanes; an hour and a quarter of very easy going. Park considerately in the village or at the Blacksmiths Arms end of Main Street; the 42 bus from York stops in Naburn, and the tarmac railway path gets you here on foot from the city. The lock cut and moorings give a dog plenty of water to drink and a safe place to swim away from the weir, and the trackbed is off-lead ground, but the riverside pasture carries cattle in summer and the lock gates themselves are no place for a loose dog; the surfaced sections stay dry all winter while the river path can flood.
