Free on the Maryport promenade; free roadside parking at the Crosscanonby saltpans layby partway along, and free parking on the green at Allonby, which fills completely on hot Sundays

The long shore walk north from Maryport promenade past Bank End, the raised beach below Swarthy Hill and the Crosscanonby saltpans, to the green at Allonby. It is mostly on the shingle and the grass above it with the coast road never far inland, and at low water there is firm sand almost the whole way. The Solway views to Criffel and the Galloway hills are the point of it. Grazing runs down to the shore in places on the Crosscanonby stretch. Buses run back from Allonby to Maryport.

THE SMALL PRINTNatural England's published rule for the England Coast Path and its coastal margin is that dogs must be kept under effective control at all times and on a short lead of no more than 2 metres at all times near livestock. Cattle and sheep graze down to the shore on the Crosscanonby and Swarthy Hill sections.
