Out along two and a quarter miles of unbroken sand from the Marske slipway to Saltburn pier, then back on the coastal path above the dunes: the standard dog walk of this coast, and one of the few where the tide rather than a by-law decides how far you get. Marske Sands carries no seasonal dog ban of any kind, and neither does the sand for most of the way, so a dog can run the whole outward leg. Only the last stretch into Saltburn is restricted, between the Hazelgrove beach access and the eastern side of the pier, and only from 1 May to 30 September; in those months turn up onto the promenade at Hazelgrove rather than walking on. Go on a falling tide, because at high water the sand narrows to nothing under the banks about halfway along.

THE SMALL PRINTThe final approach to Saltburn pier, between the Hazelgrove beach access and the eastern side of the pier, is closed to dogs 1 May to 30 September under the borough PSPO. £100 fixed penalty. Marske Sands itself is unrestricted all year.

Marske Sands

TS11 6AA
Dogs allowed all year

Marske Sands is the middle of the three-mile run of beach between Redcar and Saltburn and carries no seasonal dog ban whatever. The borough's exclusion zones are written to cover two named stretches at Redcar and Saltburn only, and the council states dogs are welcome on the other beaches in the borough through the year. Access is down the slipway from the Marske seafront car park at the end of Winkies Castle end of High Street, or from the old cemetery and the ruined St Germain's church tower above the dunes. It is a flat, firm beach with a long shallow tide, backed by grassed banks rather than promenade, and the walk south east from here to Saltburn pier is about two miles of continuous sand.

Marske Valley Gardens circuit

TS11 6AA
1.1 MI · 35M · 85% OFF-ROAD

A short loop up the wooded valley that runs inland from the Marske seafront and back down the other bank, about a mile and covering the only shelter in the village on a north-easterly. Marske Valley Gardens is one of the seven formal parks named in the borough dog PSPO, so a lead is required for the whole of the gardens: fixed leads no more than two metres, extendable ones not beyond four metres, with a £100 fixed penalty. Walk it out at the bottom and you are straight onto Marske Sands, where there is no seasonal ban at all and the lead can come off. The path is made up for most of its length and takes a buggy, though the upper end gets muddy in winter.

Talking Tides Brew Co. Taproom

TS11 6HB
No reviews yet

A brewery taproom on Ryans Row in the Longbeck industrial estate at the south end of Marske, about a mile inland from the sands and a few minutes from Longbeck station. The brewery lists itself as dog friendly on its own site, and the taproom is a single room of brewing kit and benches rather than a divided pub, so there is no dog area to be sent to. Open Thursday from 5pm, Friday from 3pm, Saturday from 1pm to 11pm and Sunday 1pm to 8pm, closed Monday to Wednesday. Beer only, no kitchen, and free parking on the estate outside.
