Directions to the start →

Eight and a quarter miles, 450 metres of climb and a good four hours: the long heathery back of Lingmoor Fell between the two Langdales, then the col below Side Pike and down the valley path past the campsite. Start from the National Trust Stickle Ghyll car park at the head of Great Langdale, paid, around 100 spaces and reliably full by half past nine; the 516 Langdale Rambler from Ambleside drops at the door. The fell is honest walking rather than scrambling, but there is one famous squeeze - the gap between rock and wall on Side Pike itself - which a big dog cannot get through, so take the bypass path below it; the whole ridge is grazed and the wall on the crest is topped with wire in places.

THE SMALL PRINTLeads throughout - Lingmoor is grazed the year round. Avoid the Side Pike squeeze, a body-width gap between crag and wall that no large dog will pass; take the marked bypass below the crag.
