Directions to the start →

Seven miles and about three and three quarter hours along the limestone terrace of Leyburn Shawl and on west above the dale to Preston-under-Scar and Redmire, returning through the parkland of the Bolton Hall estate; the terrace is firm but the return through the park is heavy clay in winter. Start in Leyburn market place, which has free parking outside market days and is served by the 156 from Northallerton and the Wensleydale Railway at Leyburn station. Sheep graze the terrace and the park and there are deer on the estate ground so keep the dog on the lead the whole way, and there is no water on the Shawl itself though the becks below Preston-under-Scar give a drink; most crossings are gates or wooden stiles that a dog can be helped over, but two narrow stone squeezes near Redmire are too tight for a large dog.

THE SMALL PRINTLeads throughout - grazed pasture and parkland with sheep, and the Wensley Park estate section carries deer as well.

A small speciality coffee bar in Leyburn turning out artisan coffee and cakes, described by the regional tourist board as a dog-friendly gem. Dogs come inside with you rather than being tied up on the pavement. A good first stop before the walk out along the Leyburn Shawl.

The Leyburn Shawl and Wensley

DL8 5BJ
4.5 MI · 2H 15M · 85% OFF-ROAD

Four and a half miles in a little over two hours along the wooded limestone terrace of the Shawl, with Wensleydale laid out below, dropping to the estate village of Wensley and returning by field paths; the going is level and easy apart from the descent. Start from Leyburn market place, where parking is free outside market days and the Little White Bus and the 156 both call. The first mile along the Shawl is a broad, safe, largely enclosed path where a dog with recall can have a proper run, but the fields towards Wensley are grazed and several stiles have no dog gate, so a big dog will need a lift over.
