An 8.7-mile village-to-village round with 190 metres of ascent, close to four hours, linking three of the prettiest settlements on the southern moors on field paths, green lanes and a short spell of moor edge. Start from the small car park in Lastingham beside St Mary's church, whose Norman crypt is worth ten minutes at the end; there is no bus of any use, so this is a car walk. Becks at Lastingham and Appleton give water, and dogs can run on the moor-edge tracks, but the field sections are full of sheep and stock-proof stiles, and leads are required on the open moor from 1 March to 31 July.
