Directions to the start →

The most direct way from the Knaptons onto the escarpment. Knapton Wold Road leaves the village as a metalled public bridleway and climbs 118 metres in a little over a mile, from 35 metres at the foot to 153 metres on the wold top, where it meets the Yorkshire Wolds Way at the caravan site on Knapton Brow. Turn south on the National Trail for the last few hundred metres to Enclosure Rites, the chalk-and-oak artwork above a dew pond looking out over the Vale of Pickering, then come back the same way. It is a lane rather than a path, so it is firm underfoot in any weather, but it carries occasional farm vehicles and there is no verge on the steep section.

THE SMALL PRINTA public bridleway used by farm traffic, then National Trail across working farmland. The Countryside Code applies: keep the dog on a lead or in sight, keep to the route, and put it on a lead around livestock; a farmer may lawfully shoot a dog that is chasing or attacking stock. The top of the climb runs past the caravan site, whose own rule is dogs on a lead.
