Four and a half miles from Kirby Knowle up through the wooded escarpment towards Cowesby and back down a rugged descending trail, about two and a quarter hours with 198 metres of climb. There is roadside parking only, the approach lanes are single track, and there is no bus, so this is a car walk. Seventy per cent of the route is genuine path with shade and running water in the woods, but the upper section is open access land with a seasonal lead requirement and there are sheep on the moor edge throughout the year.

THE SMALL PRINTOpen access land on the upper section: dogs on a lead of no more than two metres from 1 March to 31 July for ground-nesting birds; sheep grazing all year.
