No dedicated car park. Roadside parking on Highthorn Road and Hooton Road in Kilnhurst, both residential, so park considerately and walk in. The reserve is a short walk from Kilnhurst along the rivers

A post-industrial washland on the River Don between Kilnhurst and Swinton, turned into wetland by Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust and now a mosaic of grassland, scrub, hedgerow and mature trees with drains and ditches running through it. It is flat, low-lying ground beside the river and the Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation, which means it can be genuinely wet underfoot after rain, and that is the point of a washland. It is a short, level circuit rather than a day out, and it pairs well with the canal towpath running north towards Swinton.

THE SMALL PRINTSheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust's instruction on the reserve page is plain: "Please keep dogs on leads and always follow the Countryside Code." That is the landowner's rule and it applies all year. Rotherham Council's only dog order is the borough-wide Dog Fouling Public Spaces Protection Order, in operation from 29 January 2025 for three years, with a fixed penalty of up to £100 and a fine up to £1,000 on conviction; Rotherham has no order requiring leads and no order excluding dogs from open space.

A post-industrial washland on the River Don between Kilnhurst and Swinton, rewetted by Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust into grassland, scrub, hedgerow and scrapes, with the protected remains of Kilnhurst Forge still on the ground. Snipe overwinter on the scrapes in good numbers and kingfishers work the Don along the eastern boundary. Cattle graze the reserve every year from April to October, which is the main reason the Trust asks for dogs on leads. The Trust publishes no car park here; buses 217 and 218 from Rotherham town centre stop on Wharf Road, five minutes' walk away, and that is the practical way in.
