Seven and a half miles with 330 metres of ascent, three and a half hours, climbing Carr Ridge on to Urra Moor and returning along the trackbed of the Rosedale ironstone railway to the top of the ferocious Ingleby Incline. Start from the Clay Bank top car park on the B1257 above Ingleby Greenhow, which fills early at weekends; the parking is free and there are no facilities, so bring everything with you. The old railway is a wide, level, stone-surfaced track that is a joy for a dog to run on, but the moor either side is grouse ground with loose sheep and leads are required from 1 March to 31 July for ground-nesting birds.

THE SMALL PRINTLeads on the open moor 1 March to 31 July for ground-nesting birds, and around free-roaming sheep
