Our drawing of the route, over road and path data from OpenStreetMap. It shows where the walk goes and what it goes through. It is not a survey and not a navigation aid — carry OS Explorer on the hill.
Four and a bit linear miles of about two hours north-east across gently rising farmland into Filey, with only 70 metres of climbing, field-edge paths and green lanes, and one long claggy section after rain near Muston Grange. Start at the Market Place in Hunmanby, where parking is free, and take the train back from Filey to Hunmanby, a five-minute hop on the Scarborough line. The green lanes are quiet and wide enough for a dog to work ahead, but the route crosses grazed fields with kissing gates and stiles, passes close to Filey Dams nature reserve where dogs are not allowed at all, and finishes on town pavement.
A beloved cafe right at Hunmanby Gap, about four miles south of Filey along the sands, whose sign famously welcomes 'dogs with well behaved owners'. The classic finish to a long dog gallop down Filey Bay's quieter end.
A long, quiet stretch of shoreline running from the Speeton cliffs up to Filey, reached by a steep path from a private cash-only clifftop car park. Dogs are welcome all year, and its distance from the crowds makes it a favourite escape when Filey's central beach ban is in force.
A short 3.1-mile circular of about an hour and twenty minutes, down the gap onto Hunmanby Sands, north along the beach towards Filey and back up onto the clifftop path, with the 70 metres of climbing all in one pull. Park at Hunmanby Gap at the end of Sands Lane, where there is a small pay-and-display and a beach cafe; it is two miles down from Hunmanby village, which has the nearest station. This end of Filey Bay carries no seasonal dog ban at all, so it is the reliable summer choice on this coast, with miles of firm sand to run on, but check the tide because the beach narrows towards Reighton and the clifftop path runs close to a soft, slumping edge.
