Chare Ends main car park, Holy Island TD15 2SE
Parking
Large pay-and-display at Chare Ends, the island’s only car park; it fills solid in the middle of the safe crossing window in summer
Directions to the start →

A four and a half mile circuit of the island in under two hours, past the priory and the Heugh to the castle and limekilns, north to the white pyramid at Emmanuel Head and back over the dunes by Coves Haven and Snipe Point. Park at the main pay-and-display car park at Chare Ends, the only car park on the island, and check the published safe crossing times before you set out because the causeway floods twice a day. Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve requires dogs to be kept on a short lead or at heel across the reserve, with the North Shore the one place they may be let off; the flats hold internationally important wintering geese and waders.

THE SMALL PRINTNatural England requires dogs on a short lead or at heel throughout Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve; a zoning scheme allows off-lead exercise on the North Shore only, maximum two dogs per person. The causeway is submerged twice daily and crossing times must be checked.
