Five miles with 250 metres of ascent and about two and a half hours, taking the Cleveland Way up the nose of Carlton Bank, along the escarpment over Live Moor and back down by Gold Hill; the Cleveland Way here is flagged and easy but the descent path is loose shale from the old alum workings. It starts at the Lord Stones car park on the Carlton Bank road, which is pay-and-display with a cafe attached, and the lane up from Carlton-in-Cleveland is narrow with few passing places. There is a stream on the Gold Hill descent for a drink but nothing on the tops, so carry water; the escarpment is grand open ground for a dog, though gliders launch from Carlton Bank at weekends, the edge is unfenced above a long drop and sheep graze it, so leads on the moor from 1 March to 31 July.
A big 10-mile escarpment day with 540 metres of ascent and around five hours, working east from Carlton Bank over Cringle Moor and Cold Moor before returning along the dale side; the Cleveland Way sections are flagged but the drops and climbs between each moor are relentless and there is no easy escape once you commit. It starts at the Lord Stones car park on the Carlton Bank road, pay-and-display, with the cafe useful at either end and a water tap outside. There is water only in the becks at the bottom of each descent so carry plenty on a warm day, the ridge is superb open running ground, but the north edge is unfenced above steep scree, sheep are everywhere, and the moor requires leads from 1 March to 31 July for ground-nesting birds.
A short 3.4-mile round with 180 metres of climbing, well under two hours, taking the Cleveland Way up the flagged shoulder of Cringle Moor to the Alec Falconer seat and the enormous view over the Cleveland Plain. Start from Lord Stones car park on Carlton Bank, which is pay and display and has a cafe and toilets on site. There is no water on the tops so carry a bowl, the north face of Cringle Moor has a real edge that a running dog should be kept back from, and leads are required on this open access moor from 1 March to 31 July for ground-nesting birds.
