Three and a half miles there and back along the tarmac trackbed of the old Derwent Valley Light Railway, an hour and a half, level and hard-surfaced from end to end, which makes it the one York walk that is exactly as good in February as in June. It starts at Foss Islands retail park a few minutes from Layerthorpe, with free two-hour parking and every city bus passing nearby; the path runs beneath the city's bar walls at its western end, and dogs are not allowed up on the walls themselves, so do not plan to combine the two. This is a shared cycle route with no fencing to the road at either end, so a lead is the sensible choice throughout, there is no open water for a dog and no shade on the middle mile, but there is no livestock and no mud at any time of year.

THE SMALL PRINTShared with cyclists and open to roads at both ends, so leads on throughout. Dogs are not permitted on the York city walls, which the path passes beneath.
