Ten miles and around four and a quarter hours, out along the sands and up onto the Cleveland Way past Filey Brigg to Lebberston Cliff, then back inland through Gristhorpe on lanes and field paths, with a modest 140 metres of climbing but two miles of tarmac at the end. Start at Filey station, five minutes from the seafront, which saves the summer parking scramble at the Country Park. The northern half is grand off-lead clifftop once past the Brigg, but the edge is unfenced, the fields inland carry sheep and cattle, and the central Filey beach is closed to dogs in summer.

THE SMALL PRINTThe signed central stretch of Filey beach is closed to dogs from 1 May to 30 September under North Yorkshire Council's dog control public spaces protection order, with a £100 fixed penalty. Between those dates walk the sands below Filey Brigg at the north end or south past Royal Parade towards Primrose Valley, both open to dogs all year. The clifftop north of the Brigg is unfenced and eroding, and the inland return crosses grazed fields and two miles of lane with no pavement.
