Five and a half miles and about three hours, out of the plague village and up onto the heather of Eyam Moor for one of the widest views in Derbyshire. Start at the Hawkhill Road pay-and-display car park above Eyam church, a short walk from the village and rarely full; the alternative is roadside parking on the Sir William Hill road, which is rough but free. The high ground is open access land where dogs must be on a fixed lead of no more than two metres from 1 March to 31 July for the curlew and skylark that nest in the heather, sheep graze the walled fields on the way up, and there is no water on the moor.

THE SMALL PRINTOpen access moorland: a fixed lead of no more than two metres is required from 1 March to 31 July to protect ground-nesting birds, and at any time near livestock. Landowners may close access land for up to 28 days a year.
