Five and a half miles and about three hours, out of the plague village and up onto the heather of Eyam Moor for one of the widest views in Derbyshire. Start at the Hawkhill Road pay-and-display car park above Eyam church, a short walk from the village and rarely full; the alternative is roadside parking on the Sir William Hill road, which is rough but free. The high ground is open access land where dogs must be on a fixed lead of no more than two metres from 1 March to 31 July for the curlew and skylark that nest in the heather, sheep graze the walled fields on the way up, and there is no water on the moor.
Five miles and about three hours on a quiet limestone circuit through Coombs Dale, a dry valley of old lead workings and thorn scrub that almost nobody walks. It starts from the Hawkhill Road car park in Eyam and drops to Stoney Middleton, where the pavement stretch beside the A623 is short but noisy. Cattle are often turned out in the dale bottom in summer so a two-metre lead is needed near them, several of the old shafts are fenced rather than capped, and the brook in the dale runs dry in a hot spell, so bring water.
Seventeenth-century inn on Water Lane in the plague village, older than the outbreak itself. Pets are listed as welcome in the public bar, which is where to head with a dog rather than the restaurant side. Seven bedrooms upstairs are described as pet friendly, but confirm the room policy when you book.
