Route diagram, drawn from the recorded track — for the shape of the walk, not for navigation. Carry OS Explorer on the hill.

A short mile and a half round the water on a broad level track, with an optional moderate climb to Crag Nook at the north end for the view back over the reservoir to Skipton; forty-five minutes at an easy pace and passable in any weather. Park in the small free car park at the south-east corner of the reservoir, reached up Pasture Road out of Embsay village; the Embsay and Bolton Abbey steam railway station is a ten-minute walk away. There are no stiles at all on the reservoir circuit, which makes it one of the few Dales walks a big or arthritic dog can do without being lifted, but the moor above is grouse ground where leads are required from 1 March to 31 July and sheep are on the reservoir banks.

THE SMALL PRINTLeads on the open moor above the reservoir from 1 March to 31 July for ground-nesting birds, and near sheep on the banks at any time.
