The walk Cowling is built under. A field path and Lane Ends Lane lift you out of the village onto Dick Lane, the narrow tarmac lane that runs the length of the gritstone escarpment, then you drop off it onto the open crag edge to reach Wainman's Pinnacle and follow the edge east to Lund's Tower, with the Aire valley below and Pendle away to the west. The crag top is registered access land, so a dog can be off the lane on the rough ground legally, but the moor immediately south of the crag is a different matter and is covered by a live Natural England no-dogs direction. Sheep are on the crag edge and the lane verges all year, and Dick Lane is single track with no pavement, so lead work is the rule rather than the exception.

THE SMALL PRINTOpen access land: GOV.UK requires dogs on a lead of no more than two metres from 1 March to 31 July to protect ground-nesting birds, and at all times around livestock. Separately, the moor south of the crag is under Natural England restriction 2024040176, No Dogs except guide, hearing or assistance dogs, running 25 April 2024 to 24 April 2029, so do not carry on south off the crag top with a dog.

Four acres of fenced private farmland at Moss Bar Farm on the western edge of Cowling, hired by the hour for your sole use so no other dog comes through the gate while you are in it. It exists because the owner had a rescue dog that could not be let off the lead in country surrounded by grazing sheep, which is exactly the problem this end of Craven presents, and it is aimed at reactive, nervous and newly rehomed dogs and at recall training. Fencing is inspected daily, there are spare bags and a bin inside the field, and the site asks that reactive dogs do not meet outside the gate, so leave a gap between bookings. A self-service dog wash with shampoo, aprons, towels and a dryer can be booked for afterwards. Booking is online or through their app, seven days a week all year, with a full refund on cancellations up to 48 hours before.
