Parking

Free long-stay council parking at Riverhead and at Middle Street South in Driffield, both a few minutes from the basin. Riverhead has room for maybe thirty cars and is busiest on Thursday market day.

The Driffield Navigation is the eleven-mile cut that made Driffield a market town, and the top of it is a proper canal basin at Riverhead, five minutes from the Market Place and a couple of hundred yards from the railway station. This out-and-back follows the towpath south past Whin Hill Lock and Bethells Bridge to Snakeholme Lock, with the crystal-clear chalk stream of the River Hull running alongside for much of it and hardly a gradient anywhere. It is one of the few genuinely all-weather flat walks in the Wolds and the surface is grass and mown towpath rather than stone, so it takes a boot after rain. The navigation is privately maintained by the Driffield Navigation Trust rather than the Canal and River Trust, the banks are steep and the water is deep and cold, so a dog that swims is safer on a lead near the lock chambers.
