Reeth, Harkerside and Whitaside Moor

DL11 6SY
10.3 MI · 4H 35M · 90% OFF-ROAD

A big ten-and-a-half-mile day with 339 metres of climbing, four and a half hours over open heather moor scarred by old lead workings, then farmland and a mile of riverside back to the village. Start on the cobbled green in front of the Black Bull and the Kings Arms in Reeth, where there is free parking and the Little White Bus serves Richmond. The moorland is open access land, so dogs must be on a short lead from 1 March to 31 July for ground-nesting grouse and curlew, and sheep are on the moor and the in-bye all year; the Swale at the end is the best paddle on the route, but it runs fast after rain.

The Black Bull

DL11 6SZ
No reviews yet

Reeth's oldest surviving inn, dating from 1680 and looking out across the great sloping green towards Swaledale. Flagstones, beams and roaring fires, with dogs welcome in the bar area and in most bedrooms. The house rules are clear: short lead, on the floor, not on the seating or your lap.

The Buck Hotel

Coaching inn dating from 1760 at the top of Reeth's sloping green, a favourite with coast-to-coasters crossing Swaledale. The bar is busy and reliably dog friendly, food is served all day in the bar area, and dogs are welcome to stay in the en-suite rooms if flagged at booking. Fremington Edge and the Swale swing bridge walks start nearby.
