Government guidance for open access land is that "dogs must be kept under effective control at all times and on a short lead of no more than 2 metres at all times near livestock", with the short-lead rule near livestock applying between 1 March and 31 July on non-coastal access land. Herdwicks are on the Old Man year-round. Beyond the lead rule, the disused copper workings above Church Beck have unfenced shafts, spoil edges and deep water, and Dow Crag is a climbing crag with loose ground below it. Landowners may exclude dogs from small lambing fields, so obey notices at the intake gates.
