Directions to the start →

Eight miles and a good five hours, climbing the estate track past Ingleborough Cave, squeezing through the dry gorge of Trow Gill and out onto boggy open fell to the mouth of Gaping Gill before the last pull to Little Ingleborough. Start from the National Park car park in Clapham; the village is on the 581 bus from Settle and Ingleton, and there is a small charge to walk the Ingleborough Estate nature trail at the start. Keep the dog on the lead and keep it close: Gaping Gill is an unfenced hundred-metre shaft with smaller pots scattered around it, the fell carries sheep and ground-nesting birds, and Clapham Beck at the bottom is the only reliable water; the estate track uses gates rather than stiles, but the wall crossings on the return down Long Lane include two narrow stone squeezes a big dog will not get through.

THE SMALL PRINTLeads throughout - open access fell with sheep and ground-nesting birds. Gaping Gill is a 100-metre open shaft with no fence around the lip.

Clapham to Ingleborough Cave and Trow Gill

LA2 8DP
4.5 MI · 2H 15M · 90% OFF-ROAD

Four and a half miles in around two hours, up the Ingleborough Estate Nature Trail past the lake and the Farrer plantings to the show cave, then into the dry limestone gorge of Trow Gill, returning over the fields by Clapdale Farm. Good gravel track for the first mile with a modest gradient, rougher and rockier through the gill; start from the National Park car park in Clapham, and note that the nature trail is a private toll path with a small charge collected at the gate. Dogs are welcome on the estate and even inside Ingleborough Cave, but the trail is on the lead, sheep graze the higher fields, and Gaping Gill and the smaller open shafts on the moor above are unfenced holes a running dog would not survive.

Guided tours run along a concrete floodlit path past 350-million-year-old formations.
