Four and a half miles out and the same back, about four hours at a dog's pace, on the old Scarborough to Whitby railway: a wide, well-drained trackbed with only 155 metres of gentle gradient and no stiles at all. It starts at Scalby Mills by the Sea Life Centre, where the North Bay road train and the number 3 bus both terminate and there is pay-and-display parking. This is one of the best off-lead miles on the coast, level and enclosed with becks to drink from at Scalby and Burniston, but it is shared with cyclists and horses, so a dog that ignores a bell is better on a long line.
