Five and a quarter miles across the flat carr land between Carlton Miniott and Thirsk, roughly two hours on field paths, farm track and quiet road with almost no ascent at all. Start at Carlton Miniott, which has roadside parking, Thirsk railway station and a regular bus into town if you would rather walk one way. This is low, wet ground that stays boggy well into spring, several field paths cross grazing, and the East Coast Main Line and its crossings run alongside, so a lead is essential near the railway.
B&B rooms and self-catering cottages at Carlton Miniott, handy for Thirsk railway station and the racecourse. Dogs are accepted in the cottages (maximum two, 10 pounds per dog) while only one of the guest rooms takes a single dog, so book early and be specific. Flat vale lanes for morning walks start at the gate.
Boutique couples' lodges with hot tubs set among fishing lakes and woodland just west of Thirsk, with free spa access included. Several of the lodges are specifically marketed as dog friendly, so book one of those rather than turning up hopeful. A per-dog charge applies and enclosed outdoor space varies by lodge.
