Cam Houses is a handful of farm buildings at about fourteen hundred and fifty feet at the head of Langstrothdale, and this is the walk that gives the place its reason to exist. The Dales Way climbs south-west from the buildings across peat and rough grass for a mile to meet the Cam High Road, the Roman road along the fell, and from there the two national trails run together as one stony byway down to Cam End, where the Pennine Way comes up from Ling Gill. It is all open sheep ground and moor with curlew and golden plover nesting on it, so the lead goes on at the gate and stays on. There is no circuit up here that does not add several miles of moor, so turn round at the Cam End signpost and come back the same way.

THE SMALL PRINTYorkshire Dales National Park Authority advice: keep your dog on a lead on public rights of way and in fields where there is livestock present, and use a short lead from March to July because of ground-nesting birds. The fell on both sides of the track is open access land, where a lead of no more than two metres is required by law between 1 March and 31 July and around livestock at all times. Sheep are on this ground the whole year.
