Four miles and about an hour and three quarters on lanes and field paths from the village, past the ford and footbridge and out along Lime Kiln Lane to the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserve in the old magnesian limestone quarries, with 90 metres of easy climbing. Park considerately in Burton Leonard village and walk out along Lime Kiln Lane; the reserve gates are locked at times, and there is no wheelchair access to the quarry banks. Dogs are allowed on the reserve but only on a lead, because the limestone grassland with its bee and common spotted orchids is grazed to keep the scrub down; the ford is shallow enough for a paddle on the way back.

THE SMALL PRINTDogs must be on a lead throughout the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust reserve at Burton Leonard Lime Quarries, which is grazed, and across the surrounding farmland.
